Recommendations & guidelines on distance learning

According to the current measures taken by the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection concerning COVID-19, parts of the lessons might have to be taught further on via distance learning/virtual classroom (see point 7e, teaching modalities in our terms of business).

Information regarding COVID-19 precautions

Below you can find recommendations and guidelines for participating in distance learning:

  • To participate in our online courses you need a stable internet connection (10 MBit/s Download, 5 MBit/s Upload. If you are unsure of the internet speed at your specific location, please check your connection here: 
  • You will need a device with a microphone, speakers/headphones, a webcam and an (external) keyboard so that you can also perform your written tasks in the best possible way. You will work with word documents and other word-processing programs.
  • As virtual classroom, we use the external provider Zoom.

Lesson times

Distance lessons start and finish at the usual lesson times.

The lessons are taking place in our Zoom rooms. Within the lesson, offline and online tasks may alternate. Depending on the lesson's program, your instructor will send you a schedule of exercises and assignments.

Behaviour in the chatroom/digital classroom

  • Please prevent background noise as far as possible
  • Please add your own, correct name to pictures (even without a camera) for the purposes of attribution/to confirm attendance
  • If you would like to speak, please put your hand up– just as you would in a larger group in a real classroom
  • For data protection reasons, it is not permitted to record videos or save screenshots of the digital classroom
  • Please adhere to netiquette, i.e. treat the teacher and other course participants with respect. The course rules obviously also apply to distance learning.

Our attendance regulations for distance learning

If you are working towards a certificate and therefore need to be in attendance for at least 75% of the course (there are different attendance rules for VWU courses):

  • Assignments should be submitted during course times if possible, or at a time agreed with the teacher. If this is not possible in exceptional (!) cases, please let the teacher know. It may be possible to accommodate you.
  • In addition to attending distance lessons, your teacher will assign homework. Submitting homework is not a substitute for attendance on the day of the lesson (via distance learning).
  • Persons who only log in to Zoom, but do not submit any assignments, or do not contribute to the communication and do not participate in other ways, cannot be recorded to have attended the lesson in question. Active participation must be apparent to the teacher. 

Online exams

  • Online exams take place on our learning plattform Moodle. During the course, you will have the chance to make yourself familiar with Moodle.
  • Participants are responsible for safeguarding the technical requirements for the exam situation.
  • To safeguard the academic integrity, special measures might include a declaration under oath, having the camera on during the test, certain browser settings or a check against any discrepancies or plagiarism. You will receive detailed information during the course.
  • Do speak to your teacher if you have any questions about the online exam.

General rules for distance learning

  • Protect your data and those of your fellow course participants and humans by paying attention to who can listen in to the lessons. Persons who join the online class and cannot plausibly identify themselves as a course participant (by switching on the camera at least for a short time or via other suitable forms of identification) will be logged out and not recorded as having attended the lesson.
  • Unfortunately, there have been cases in which persons who have not paid for the course in question have attempted to participate for free. For this reason, we hope you will understand that your teacher may on occasion ask you to identify yourself.
