There is no general answer to that question, as there are numerous factors involved - among others, your first language, your previous knowledge of the target language, further languages spoken, course intensity, the amount of time you have available, etc.

As a rule, it is not easy to go from beginner level to academic level within a short span of time. Most learners need a minimum of 1,5-2 years.

The University Preparation Programme is an institution providing university preparation courses for non-EU, respectively non-EEA students. Its role is to prepare future students for the supplementary examinations they will need to take in order for their high-school graduation certificates to be recognized as equivalent to the Austrian one.
There are supplementary examinations in German, English, mathematics, history, biology, physics and chemistry.
