Is the Online Bridge Course for German the right course for me?
The online bridge course is the right course for you if you agree with one of these statements:
- You have reached the proficiency level A2 in German and have applied for admission to study at a Viennese university.
- You have already been admitted to a Viennese university and are required to take the supplementary examination in German. However, you are not yet able to enter Vienna/Austria and are waiting for your residence permit or visa.

What are my advantages, when attending the Online Bridge Course?
Make the most of the waiting time until you are admitted to university. With better German skills, you will achieve higher success in the German placement test in our German courses for the VWU. You will build up your German skills quickly and efficiently in order to prepare specifically for the Supplementary German Examination. The faster you complete the German courses for the VWU, the faster you can start your studies. This can save you time and money.
The bridge courses for German take place online. You can participate from any location. You start with a consolidation of level A2+ and build up to level B1 continuously.
Duration: 9 weeks
Intensity: 5x/week, Mon - Fri
Teaching units/day: 2,4
Teaching units/week: 12 (total: 108 units per course)
Course times: 14:00 - 15:50 afternoons (CEST/UTC+2)
Course fees 2024: EUR 825
1 teaching unit = 45 minutes
The course schedule is available as of the first day of registration.
Minimum requirement: Proof of German level A2 (exam passed).
When registering for the course, you must upload an A2 certificate. This is the certificate that you also need to present when applying for admission.
The following certificates are accepted in any case:
- Österreichisches Sprachdiplom – A2 (ÖSD Zertifikat A2, ZA2)
- Goethe Institut – Goethe Zertifikat A2
- telc Deutsch - A2
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz Stufe I - DSD
- Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) - ÖIF Test (A2)
- Language Center of an Austrian University - successfully passed exam of level A2
- Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test DaF) with at least level TDN 3 in all parts
These certificates must not be older than two years.
You can also upload the following documents:
- school report of a secondary school including the subject German
- passed courses of 8 ECTS credits or 200 hours instructed in German within a degree programme at a recognised post-secondary educational institution
These proofs are valid for an unlimited time.
Not necessary: Letter of admission from a university
- You will learn in a group of 10–16 students and benefit from personal support by the instructor.

- Additional learning materials and exercises will be accessible via the Moodle platform of the Language Center of the University of Vienna. After the end of the course, the material wil be accessible on the platform for one year.
- To participate in our online courses you need a stable internet connection (10 MBit/s Download, 5 MBit/s Upload. If you are unsure of the internet speed at your specific location, please check your connection here: https://www.speedtest.net).
- You will need a device with a microphone, speakers/headphones, a webcam and an (external) keyboard so that you can also perform your written tasks in the best possible way. You will work with word documents and other word-processing programs.
- As virtual classroom, we use the external provider Zoom.

In order to apply for admission to a university in Vienna/Austria, you need German language skills at level A2 (or higher).

We offer German courses at all levels from A1 to C1 on-site in Vienna or online. With proof of language skills at C1, you do not need to take the Supplementary German Examination. The certificates of the Language Center are recognized by the Viennese universities as proof of German language skills.
