Target Group:
This course is intended for anyone with an interest in the Syrian language and culture. Prior knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic or other Arabic dialects is beneficial but not required. The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the Syrian dialect and is suitable for both language learners and those interested in cultural studies.
It is particularly well-suited for students of Near Eastern Studies or related fields who wish to expand their knowledge by learning an important regional variety of Arabic.

Content
: The course focuses on the Syrian dialect as spoken in Syria, Lebanon, and parts of Jordan and Palestine.
The core material is based on the textbook "Lehrbuch des Syrisch-arabischen I", which provides a thorough introduction to the grammar and sentence structures of the Syrian dialect. Emphasis is placed on practical language skills for everyday situations and on the cultural context of Syria.
The goal is to provide a solid understanding of both the linguistic characteristics and the cultural background of the Syrian dialect.

Method:
The course uses practice-oriented methods that emphasize active language use. Dialogues, role-playing, and listening comprehension exercises offer participants the opportunity to apply and deepen the vocabulary and structures introduced in the textbook.
Grammar topics are addressed systematically through the textbook and reinforced with targeted exercises to build a solid foundation in the language’s structure.
In addition, learning strategies for sustainable language acquisition are introduced and practiced.

At the end of the course, participants can receive a graded certificate subject to a minimum of 75% course attendance and passing grades in all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing). The ultimate decision regarding recognition (or non-recognition) of ECTS points (credits) lies with your university’s or institutes’ Study Program Administration [Studienprogrammleitung].
4 ECTS.
