If you have a good command of a foreign language already, then our special courses are the right choice for you.These courses offer you the opportunity to work on specific aspects of the language.

You will have the chance to practice, refresh and refine your language skills.

Within one semester, you will improve your proficiency without having to spend too much time and effort (only 2,5 hours per week).

We regularly offer specialized courses on various topics for English, French, Italian and Spanish

If you proof your achievements in the course, you will be issued a certificate with ECTS credits at the end of the course.

Refresher Courses for levels A2 | B1 | B2 | C1

Have you learned one of these languages before but you haven't used it for a while, or would you simply like to feel more confident?

Our refresher courses help you strengthen your skills by focusing on revision, consolidation, and the confident application of what you have already learned. With practical exercises and authentic materials, you will quickly regain routine and confidence for everyday situations, work, or your next language course.

Language Competency Certificate for Outgoing Students

These courses conclude with a final exam. Course certificates from level B1 onwards serve as proof of language proficiency for Erasmus+ and other mobility programmes. If you are successfully nominated for a study-abroad stay through the University of Vienna’s International Office, you are eligible for a partial refund of the course fees.

Duration: 3 weeks, 18 units per week
Intensity: 2x/week, Mon+Wed or Tue+Thu
Teaching units per day: 3 units
Course time: evenings

1 teaching unit = 45 minutes

Regular course fee 2025-26: EUR 290 per Specialized Course with 18 units

The course materials will be provided by your teacher without any extra charge.

Discounts:

  • for Austrian pupils, students and employees of the University of Vienna aswell as the Medical University: 25%
  • for recipients of federal aid for students (at the University of Vienna): 50%
  • for members of the Alumni Association of the University of Vienna: 10%

The decision regarding recognition (or non-recognition) of ECTS points (credits) lies with your university’s or institutes’ Study Program Administration [Studienprogrammleitung].

Self-assessment is also possible, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level descriptions.

Registration can be carried out online or directly at the office of the Language Center of the University.

Specialized Courses 30 units

  • October – November | Registration starts mid of August
  • March –  May | Registration starts mid of January

Duration: 10 weeks, 30 units per course
Intensity: 3 units once a week
Course times: depending on specific courses on offer (mornings/afternoons/evenings)

one unit = 45 minutes

Regular course fee 2026: EUR 492 per Specialized Course with 30 units

The course materials will be provided by your teacher without any extra charge.

You will not be required to buy any text books. Custom-tailored course materials will be supplied by your instructor.

The specialized courses conclude with a proof of achievement (examination, presentation, portfolio or similar). ECTS points will be issued on your certificate, provided that you have profen your achievments and attended a minimum of 75% of the classes. 

If you are not aiming for a certificate of achievement, you will receive a certificate of attendance if you attend the course regularly (75% attendance).

4 ECTS für Spezialkurse_30 UE_EN

Prior to the beginning of the course, the Language Center offers assessment tests. Self-assessment is also possible, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level descriptions.
